Caldera and Volcano
The Caldera is the huge basin formed after the eruption that
took place between 1650 and 1500 B.C, when the volcanic cone of
the ancient Stronghyle collapsed in
an abyss about 800 meters deep, and then it was immediately
covered by the Aegean Sea.
The today active volcano, Nea Kameni, came out after
the 1573 eruption and now it can be visited on foot with an
excursion by caique. During the trip about 20 minutes long, it
is possible to reach the crater where the heat and the
sulphureous smell can be felt.
Palea Kameni the ancient volcano, came out in
197 B.C.
Now there is a small white church and a hot springs where people
can swim. The caique excursions generally leaves from the old
harbour in Thera, but sometimes they
stop in Oia, and in the island of
Thirasia.
